Deerstalker (Sherlock's Hat)


To create the deerstalker, I started with the head part. To create this I had found an image of a deerstalker and opened it in the front perspective.  I the created a spline and used the lathe nurbz. This gave me cup shape for the head.








I then had to create the front and back flaps of the deerstalker. To create those I started with a cylinder that I made editable. I then scaled it flat and so it had more of a point in the side directions. I then added a hyper nurbz to make it more smooth and round. To make sure that the flaps didn't appear on the inside of the head part I created a shape that fit inside the head part and used the boole tool so that both flaps were booled.




To create the flaps that are connected to the side of the deerstalker I started with a cube. I made the cube editable and selected the top face, I then extruded and rotated so that it extrudes up the shape of the side of the hat. I then repeated the process until it reached the top. I then scaled the extruded cube and made it thin. I then added a hyper nurbz and made a copy for the other side.









For the ribbon that connects the flaps at the top I created a sphere and scaled it so that it was flatter. I then created a torus and scaled it so that it was oval, I made a copy of the torus and positioned them so they were the loops in the ribbons. For the bottom ribbon pieces I started with a cube and extrude and rotated it until it reached the right length. I then scaled it to make it thinner and made a copy for the other side.

Applications of 3D

There are a range of outlets that Cinema 4D can be used for such as; product design, animation, TV, film, games and interactive, education and architecture. I will be discussing why they use cinema 4D.

Product Design
Cinema 4D is used in product design so that they can see the finished product before they make it so that if they decide to improve on the designs, they haven't wasted a large amount of money only to scrap it and can just change the model. It can also be used to decide on measurements so that when the designers do make the product they will have the correct measurements and can avoid having to remake the product. Gtech uses cinema 4D to help design their multi cordless vacuum and it's various parts and measurements.



Animation
Animation is used to show movement. If you modelled something for a company that would have to move for example a toy, you would show how the toy moved using animation. You could also animate a person to make them look like they are moving the toy to show how it would have to move with a person. This gives the design of a product a more realistic viewpoint and helps designers understand how the product is meant to move.




TV
Cinema 4D is used to create CGI in a wide range of television outlets. They can be used as logos, special effects and adverts. MTV used cinema 4D to create a logo full of moving objects that look realistic but wouldn't have moved the same if they had used the actual objects. An advantage of using cinema 4D though is that the end results looks so realistic that some people can't tell the difference between models and actual objects.



Film
Cinema 4D used in film is similar to how it is used in television. It is majorly used though to create objects that don't exist for example the Chitauri army in the Avengers. It is also used to create animated movies as it is easier to create and animate in cinema 4D than it is to create clay models and manually move them frame by frame, this would also save a lot of time. Cinema 4D also allows a sort of realism that clay objects can't achieve and thus produce greater results.



Game & Interactive
Games use cinema 4D to create realistic and sometimes obviously non realistic games. The use of cinema 4D is so that characters, scenes or miscellaneous items can be edited and perfected before the game is has been made so that they won't have to scrap everything. This means they can get scale, measurements and detail all edited to make the game as realistic as needed.



Education
Cinema 4D can be used to educate the masses as well. Technology has advance so much that people are usually using a computer for something, so it would be easier to teach them by creating animated lessons and putting them on youtube or other popular websites. This would help children learn as they have a low attention span so if the animation was playing on youtube it would keep their attention more than a person droning on at them in person. My example of an animated lesson is controversial to my point as it explains why people should't be using all this technology but it supports my point because I have learned from it and it is using cinema 4D to teach me.



Architectural
Cinema 4D is used widely when it comes to architecture. It is mainly used to plan out how the building would look and what measurements will be needed so that when it comes to building it, they will know exactly what they need and less mistakes will be made if any. This would also save money as they will only have to pay for what they need and if less mistakes are made then less money will be used to repair and if no mistakes are made then no extra money is used.

Proposal

Working Title: SuperWhoLock: The Animated Series

Application: For my 3D modelling project I have decided to produce an animated series combining three different popular tv shows. I will be recreating different objects from the shows Supernatural, Doctor Who and Sherlock.

Target Audience: My target audience will be male and females between the age of 16 and 40, as they are the age range that will recognise the shows and enjoy them. Since Supernatural is a gore show the lowest age rating is 16 as that is the age rating for that show and the gore would be inappropriate for younger audiences.

Objects To Be Modelled: The objects I will be modelling will be different objects or settings from the show.

  • SuperWhoLock Logo (Combination of all logos)
  • Sonic Screwdriver (Doctor Who-10th Doctor)
  • The Samulet (Supernatural)
  • Sherlock's Hat (Sherlock)
  • The Men of Letters Bunker (Supernatural)
  • The Tardis (Doctor Who-10th Doctor)

Visual Style: The various objects will be placed around the Men of Letters Bunker, because the bunker is underground it will be darker than a normal lit room but there will be dim lighting. The logo will have a darker theme to it, black and dark navy blues, because each programme tend to have dark themes during the series. The samulet will look more rusty, like old metal that has chipped away from age. The Tardis will be the tenth doctor's so it will look slightly charred as the tenth's did before it regenerated with the eleventh.

Legal And Ethical Decisions: Since the tv shows Doctor Who and Sherlock belong to The BBC and Supernatural belongs to The CW then recreating objects means I have to be aware of copyright legal problems. Therefore I will credit both the BBC and the CW and any objects made will be used by those companies. Since the objects will be working with the BBC then the objects have to be at the highest professional standard and have to follow the BBC guidelines. I will research the BBC guidelines to make sure that my objects do follow these rules.
